Last season we saw a fierce competition for the NFL MVP award between Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. Who knows? Had Hurts not missed two games with injury, maybe the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback could have won his first MVP Trophy. Instead, Mahomes took home his second award since 2018 while leading all QBs in passing yards and touchdowns.
Heading into a new season brings updated 2023-24 NFL MVP betting odds, which, to no surprise, features mostly quarterbacks. This is because the last time a non-QB won NFL MVP was in 2012 when Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson took home the honors.

NFL MVP odds 2023-2024: Breaking down biggest favorites
- Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs: Coming off his second career NFL and Super Bowl MVPs, it’s no surprise for Mahomes to be the favorite again. He’s an annual threat to lead the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns while keeping the Chiefs in first place.
- Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals: Amazingly, Burrow got to the Super Bowl quicker than any other No. 1 overall pick in NFL history. He has the league on notice after reaching the AFC Championship in two of his first three years. There’s no telling what he can accomplish next.
- Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills: Boasting a tantalizing combination of arm talent plus escapability, Allen is certainly one of the best young QBs in football. If the Bills still can’t find a game-changing running back, Allen could continue posting big numbers for years to come. But to win an MVP, Allen will have to reduce his turnovers.
- Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles: Prior to his injury, Hurts was leading a potent offense that was among the best rushing attacks in football. Hurts was on pace to bring somewhere near 900 yards rushing, but he also took a major step forward as a passer. This was clear just from looking at his improved completion rate (66.5%) while also being aggressive going downfield (8.0 Y/A). An MVP trophy may have been within reach, but missing two games put a fork in his chances. Perhaps he can complete the task in 2023.
- Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers: Despite having just three years of experience, Herbert already has two seasons topping 4,700 passing yards. He’s just getting started, and now that the Chargers hired Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator, we could see the young gunslinger unleashed in 2023.
- Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars: The No. 1 overall pick in 2021, Lawrence took a giant leap forward in 2022. Who’s to say he can’t take another Jaguar-sized leap in 2023? Heading into the second year of Doug Pederson’s system, Lawrence may become a legit MVP candidate this season.
- Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens: While injuries have gotten in the way of Jackson’s success the past few seasons, there shouldn’t be any long-term concerns. The 2019 NFL MVP winner should have better odds simply because there are few quarterbacks who are more dangerous with the ball in their hands. Plus, getting OBJ and Zay Flowers should only help his numbers improve.
- Aaron Rodgers, New York Jets: With Rodgers reunited with Nathaniel Hackett on the Jets, we expect a bounce-back season now that he’s set to be surrounded by a better cast of weapons. When he’s at his best, we can’t rule the four-time MVP winner out. We just don’t know for sure if we’ll see Rodgers in top form again.
- Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins: What if Tagovailoa hadn’t suffered multiple concussions in 2022? We’ll never know what could have been, but he still led the NFL in touchdown rate, yards per attempt, and QB rating. If he can play a full year, Tagovailoa could very well add an MVP Trophy to his showcase.
- Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings: Putting his team on his back, Jefferson seemingly almost single-handedly turned the Vikings into a dangerous threat on any given Sunday. Regularly a threat to gain 100 yards or more, defenses always have to account for the third-year pro. Finishing with 1,809 receiving yards last season, Jefferson was once a longshot MVP candidate, but being held to a career-low one reception to go with just 15 receiving yards in Week 17 all but ended his very slim chances. Barring another strong start, it would be extremely difficult for Jefferson or any other non-QB to win an NFL MVP award.
Bottom line: As we saw last season, the MVP race doesn’t truly take shape until the final stretch of the season, when playoff teams start becoming established.
In this case, it was Jalen Hurts who dropped out of the running, despite being the frontrunner when he suffered a shoulder sprain knocking him out of two games. But Patrick Mahomes had been doing his thing all along, leading the NFL’s top-scoring offense while passing for a career-high 5,250 yards. He’s our choice to win the 2023-24 NFL MVP trophy again, as Travis Kelce is set to return, and the Chiefs will likely find other ways to strengthen their receiving corps.
When will the 2024 NFL MVP be announced?
Last year Mahomes was announced as the league’s MVP for the 2022-23 season on Feb. 11, which took place three days before the Super Bowl.
